Introduction to Swing Dancing

This class is structured in a way that all students will change partners constantly throughout the class. We will begin with a brief Happy Hour social time from 6:30 – 6:45, which will allow you time to get checked in and to change your shoes (and perhaps have a glass of wine!). Instruction will run from 6:45 – 8:00, with a half-hour of open floor time with music afterwards for students to stay and dance.

Swing dancing has two roles, a leader and a follower. Leaders typically navigate the geography of the dance and movement across the floor, while followers interpret and modify moves throughout the dance. Swing dance roles are gender-free and dancers usually try both leading and following throughout their time enjoying this art form. We only ask that students pick and stick with one role for the duration of a class.

Partnered dancing is a close-contact activity so we require everyone to wear a mask that covers their nose & mouth while dancing. Do not attend class if you feel unwell, if you have had a positive COVID test recently, or if you have someone in your home with COVID.

Beginners do not need to purchase dance shoes, but we do ask that you do not dance in the shoes you just wore in from outside (this brings in gravel, dirt and other abrasive material which can damage our floor). Please bring any clean pair of shoes with a flat/smooth sole to change into for class. Not appropriate or safe: sandals, flip flops, heeled or platform shoes taller than 2 inches, narrow/spiked heels (like a stiletto), or any shoe without a back (clogs, mules, etc)
